What is

Coaching?

Page 2

The Concise Oxford Dictionary defines the verb to coach as to 'tutor, train, give hints to, prime with facts'. As those things can be done in many ways, some of which bear little or no relationship to coaching, it is worth looking a little further for the real meaning.

Coaching is as much about the way things are done as about what is done. Coaching aims to enhance the performance and learning ability of others and involves giving feedback, effective questioning, and motivation. It is a dynamic interaction and does not rely on a one-way flow of telling or instruction.

At SmartCoaching, we see coaching as being about our ability, through effective communication, to help and guide you to attain your goals, and so reach your definition of success. Results are achieved in large measure because of the supportive relationship between our professional coaches, and you the client. The relationship is based on mutual trust and respect and our belief that you have all the answers within yourself, just waiting for us to draw it out of you. Coaching is a way of giving purpose and direction back to individuals who may have lost sight of their goals - or who have never dared to dream before.

To find in ourselves what makes life worth living is a risky business, for it means that once we know we must seek it. It also means that without it life will be valueless. As coaches, we are helping our clients recognise what is important to them, and empowering them to make changes in their world to bring those things closer, whilst supporting the client as they grapple with the risk factors attached. It is a unique and dynamic experience, with no two clients the same, the thrill is in the unpredictability of the challenge that faces the two of us as we work together.
